Notice these landmarks

B-flat and E-flat are in the signature. F natural is the seventh and sits two semitones below G; F-sharp would change the collection to harmonic minor.

The half-step pairs are A–B♭ and D–E♭. The complete step sequence is 2–1–2–2–1–2–2 semitones. Check the gap back to the upper tonic as well as the gaps within the seven-note list.

Same collection, a different tonic

B♭ major shares these pitch classes and this key signature. Its tonic and degree numbering differ. Play a short phrase that begins and ends on G, then compare one centered on B♭; a shared note collection does not make their tonal centers identical.

Keep the minor forms separate

Natural minor retains E♭ and F. Harmonic minor raises the seventh to F♯. In the classical melodic-minor setting, ascending playback also raises the sixth to E; descending playback returns to the natural-minor notes. Those are deliberate changes, not alternative names for the same scale.

Practice the two small steps

Play slowly enough to name each note. Pause before A–B♭ and D–E♭ and predict the next key. Then descend without changing the collection. Use note names first, switch to degrees, and check whether you can locate the tonic without relying on the gold highlight.

  1. Choose G and natural minor in the scale explorer.
  2. Play one ascent and one descent.
  3. Save a reference that includes the note names, degrees and selected scale.
